I am primarily a digital artist.  My digital works are thoughtfully created and are meant to appeal to viewers in very different ways, creating reactions ranging from delight to discomfort.

I use bright colors to superficially delight and enchant the viewer.  At first glance my work brings smiles to people's faces.  Your art is so happy, I often hear.  Babies and young children really enjoy my work, which makes me happy.  That iswhat children are supposed to feel as they look at my art.

As the viewer becomes accustomed to one of my pieces, other layers begin to unfold.  Beneath the colors there is sadness and anxiety.  Often there is a general discomfort with the world. Things are not as expected.  There are other perspectives beyond that which we consciously notice.

Much of my work is meant to be saccharine, especially the rainbows.  They often have too many bands of bright color and too many clouds.  They are repeated to uncomfortable excess in my rainbow collages.  The trees and shrubs are meant to feel awkward in their barren abstract landscapes.  I think of it as taking happiness and exaggerating it by stretching it like a rubber band.  Happiness is a luxury that should be exaggerated.

The computer has played a vital role in my creative process.  Working in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop on the oranges and other illustrations allows me to fine-tune colors until they give the illusion of being brighter than they actually are. I rely on my intuition to craft each piece until it feels right.  I have worked on and reworked many of my pieces for years.

My generative works take the capabilities of the computer a step further.  By writing computer code to choose colors and draw shapes for me, I am able to create art that my intuition alone would not have guided me to create.  The rainbows have a dissonant quality that only a computer can produce, which amplifies the level of discomfort to the viewer.

In addition to digital format, I enjoy working in more traditional media in my free time, especially relief sculpture.

I have a voracious appetite for contemporary art and have been inspired and influenced by countless artists.  I hope to inspire others in return.
